Imprisoned Iowa man dies

IOWA CITY, Iowa - The Iowa Department of Corrections said a man imprisoned for beating a woman to death has died.

According to a IDOC news release, Rick Bird died from natural causes on Jan. 1 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. Corrections officials said that Bird was 72 at the time of his death.

Bird had been serving a life sentence after being found guilty of first-degree murder in the killing of his girlfriend, 47-year-old Linda Trenkle, in Creston, Iowa, in 1997.
